Stimulus programme should combine recovery and decarbonisation objectives

Eurovent calls for an ambitious EU green recovery package that focuses on renovating the EU ‘s building stock, modernising the energy system, and investing in digitalisation and the circular economy. The next EU budget presents a unique opportunity to reboot the European economy and set it on the track to carbon-neutrality.

Much more investment in decarbonisation needed in EU with focus on energy efficiency

The report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows a growing gap between rhetoric and action in decarbonising the economy. Although the uptake of renewables in the EU is accelerating, progress on energy efficiency – especially in buildings – is too slow. The EU stands the most to gain from the energy transition but a much higher level of funding in building renovation and the deployment of energy efficiency technologies is needed to reach the 2050 targets. The solution lies at the nexus of the European Green Deal and the COVID-19 recovery plan.

European Commission improved its guidance for better energy efficiency investments in buildings, but Member States implementation falls short of best practice, say Auditors

The European Court of Auditors’ recent Special Report ‘Energy efficiency in buildings’ shows that EU-funded projects still do not focus on achieving the greatest potential energy savings per euro invested. Although the Commission has issued extensive guidance for improving energy efficiency investments in buildings including their cost-effectiveness, audited Member States allocated budget to projects on a first-come first-served basis, without weighing relative costs and benefits.

Next edition of Europe’s HVACR flagship event to take place from 12 to 15 October 2021

Owing to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, the organisers of the EUROVENTSUMMIT have announced the postponement of its upcoming edition to 2021. Initially scheduled for September 2020, it will now take place from 12 to 15 October 2021 in Antalya, Turkey.

Results of the EEPLIANT2 Work Package 6 have been released

Within the EEPLIANT2 project, a number of Market Surveillance Authorities (MSAs) monitored and verified in a coordinated manner the conformity of 64 Professional Refrigerated Storage Cabinets with the Ecodesign Regulation 2015/1094 and Energy Labelling Regulation 2015/1094. Seven penalties were imposed, and products were removed from the market.

The European Commission is expected to announce its Circular Economy Action Plan on 10 March 2020. It will include a series of initiatives that should result in a strategy for the built environment.

To meet the EU’s energy and climate targets for 2030, EU Member States need to establish a 10-year NECP for the period of 2021 to 2030 by the end of 2018. The Commission assessed the various plans and provided recommendations to the Member States. The final NECPs, except for those from Bulgaria, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Romania, Spain and United Kingdom have been published on the Commission website at the end of February 2020.

Final energy consumption stable in 2018 but remains 3,2% above 2020 target

New Eurostat figures show that final energy consumption in the EU reached 990 Mtoe in 2018, an increase of 0,02% compared to 2017. The greatest increases were observed in the energy consumption of buildings. The EU risks missing its binding energy efficiency objective to reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2020. Current energy savings plans from Member States risk falling short of the 2030 target as well by 6,2 percentage points.
