Mail packaged in plastic subject to bans (GEN - 1284.00)

Trend to be considered

GEN - 1284.00. From 28 December 2021, the Belgian postal service Bpost must prohibit the sending of mail packaged in plastic (including biodegradable or organic) to any address in the Belgian region Wallonia. Plastic packages will be sanctioned with an amount of € 50/shipment.

Walloon government decree

This decree was adopted last year on 23 April and published on 8 May.

The decree aims to limit plastic waste and fits within the context of the EU directive 2019/904 on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment

Eurovent is not aware of similar implementations in other Member States or regions.

As with the prohibition regarding single use plastic shopping bags, it is possible a similar legislation could appear elsewhere.

Recommended actions

Eurovent members are recommended to check national and regional legislation that may have a similar approach. In case of mass mailings, the fines could rapidly add up.
